Aggregating, i.e. combining two or more machines into a unit called an aggregate, serves primarily to reduce the number of passes over the field.
Aggregating, i.e. combining two or more machines into a unit called an aggregate, serves primarily to reduce the number of passes over the field.
The positive effects of the reduction in the number of journeys are:
- reducing the amount of fuel burned in the tractor, which in turn reduces the cost and emissions of carbon dioxide and other harmful combustion products,
- easier adherence to agronomic deadlines, as fewer passes require fewer days with optimum weather and soil condition,
- reduced compaction of the soil by the wheels of tractors and machinery, resulting in an improved soil structure and therefore in higher yields and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
Aggregating machinery is a recommended and necessary procedure in sustainable agriculture – but it should be carried out by someone with the right knowledge and skills.
